there’s a first time for every Spring…

Of course, it had to happen this way.

That I’d procrastinate long enough about writing my first introductory blog post, it would invariably meld into something of an entirely different nature…which in this case, is my entry for the #SpringFlingKidlit contest!

(Note: if you’re getting writer's block about your own self, that’s probably not the best sign.)

It’s the pressure of a first impression though, isn’t it? The “we’re on our first date and oh no, I’ve just realized there’s spinach in my teeth” equivalent.

So I’ll just start off in the same manner I always have on every first date I’ve been on - as my awkward, hopefully authentic, self.

Hi, I’m Kimberly Lee. Willkomen, bienvenue, welcome.

(Bonus points if you get that reference.)

The events of the last 3 to 4 months have unfurled at such a whirlwind pace for me that I’ve barely had time to catch my breath. But that’s a story for another day (hold me accountable, people, please!).

For now, let me just focus on my entry for the aforementioned #SpringFlingKidlit :) Founded by the wonderful Ciara O’Neal and Kaitlyn Sanchez, the Spring Fling Kidlit contest is in its third year and going strong.

The objective? To encourage kidlit writers to craft short stories of no more than 150 words in length, inspired by any GIFs of their choice about spring.

(Fun) challenge accepted.

This little piece of mine is a nod to the adorable absurdity that is Frozen’s Olaf craving a day out in the sun.

Which, naturally, had me wondering: what might a snowflake truly feel about the changing of the seasons? About watching the world coming to life, just as its own days were drawing to a close? What if this were something not to be feared, but looked forward to instead?

(Ok, that took on a slightly more serious turn, didn’t it? Lol.) Hold the tissues though - I’d like to think that this story ends on a poignant, but positive, note. Very Circle of Life (what is up with my Disney references today?!)

So anyway, here goes:

A SNOWFLAKE’S DAY IN THE SUN

(134 words)

I remember the day when I first fell,

off the wings of a cold and blustery spell.

Finding a home on top of this tree,

wistfully watching the world around me.

But snowflakes soon sense a change in the breeze -

the warm winds of freedom (with less of a freeze).

The thing that I’ve longed for, through each silent night:

the dawning of Spring and all its delights!

A bobtail emerges from burrows of deep,

as all life awakens from their wintry sleep.

I watch in wonder as green leaves unfurl

and nature’s bright paintbrush starts shaping the world.

But as Sun stretches its rays with a yawn,

I know that my time on Earth will be gone.

Waving my six points as I say goodbye,

a little snow angel returns to the sky.

Thanks for keeping up with me this long  - I hope you enjoyed reading this!

(And here’s hoping we wind up on that second date soon!) ;)
